<p class="just">Doudney’s family moved to a remote village in Hampshire when she was very young. Her first literary effort was the poem “The Lessons of the Water-Mill,” written at age 15; it became a popular song in America. She was known to the reading public mainly through her stories, <em>A Woman’s Glory</em>, <em>Stepping Stones</em>, and others, and through her contributions to the <em>Sunday Magazine</em>, <em>Good
|
|
Words</em>, and other periodicals. Those contributions included fiction, and sacred and secular poems. Houlston published her <em>Psalms of Life</em> in 1871.</p>
