<h2>401. THE DEATH OF CHRIST</h2>
|
|
<p>The pith and power of the Gospel are the death and resurrection
|
|
of Christ. The former is its pith, and the latter is its power. The
|
|
death of Christ is—</p>
|
|
<p>1. <b>Real as to its Occurrence.</b> "Christ that <i>died</i>" (<a id="fem401-si1" onclick="return mV('Rom',8,34);">Rom 8:34</a>). "Christ <i>died</i>" (<a id="fem401-si2" onclick="return mV('Rom',14,15);">Rom 14:15</a>; <a id="fem401-si3" onclick="return mV('1Cr',8,11);">1Cr 8:11</a>). Towering o'er the wrecks of time, there is one fact that shines out in unmistakable reality, and that is, the death of Christ.</p>

|
<p>2. <b>Substitutionary in its Character.</b> "Christ <i>died</i> for the ungodly," "Christ <i>died</i> for us" (<a id="fem401-si4" onclick="return mV('Rom',5,6,7,8);">Rom 5:6-8</a>). Christ was acting on our behalf that He might protect us from the consequence of sin in dying in our stead.</p>

<p>3. <b>Definite in its Work.</b> "He <i>died</i> unto sin once" (<a id="fem401-si5" onclick="return mV('Rom',6,10);">Rom 6:10</a>). "Christ <i>died</i> for our sins" (<a id="fem401-si6" onclick="return mV('1Cr',15,3);">1Cr 15:3</a>). His death had distinct relation to our sin. He died to bear away our <i>sins</i>, and to be judged for our <i>sin</i>.</p>

|
<p>4. <b>Freeing in its Aim.</b> "He <i>died</i> for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto Him who <i>died</i> for them and rose again" (<a id="fem401-si7" onclick="return mV('2Cr',5,15);">2Cr 5:15</a>). In the death of Christ we have the magnet which draws us from self to Himself.</p>

|
<p>5. <b>Practical in its Purpose.</b> "To this end Christ both <i>died</i>, and rose, and revived, that He might be Lord both of the dead and living" (<a id="fem401-si8" onclick="return mV('Rom',14,9);">Rom 14:9</a>). He died that He might gain us, and now we are His absolute property.</p>

<p>6. <b>Assurance of Future Glory.</b> "Who <i>died</i> for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him" (<a id="fem401-si9" onclick="return mV('1Th',5,10);">1Th 5:10</a>). The blood-red mark of Christ's cross is stamped on every certificate of heaven.</p>

<p>7. <b>Guarantee that our loved ones, who have fallen asleep, shall be with us in Christ's coming glory.</b> "If we believe that Jesus <i>died</i> and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him" (<a id="fem401-si10" onclick="return mV('1Th',4,14);">1Th 4:14</a>). There is one ray that shall make the golden glory of Christ's splendour bear a rosy tint, and that is the red light of Calvary.</p>
