<p>There are those who teach that it is not proper for the believer to develop their mind. They believe that faith in Christ must be a blind leap in the dark. However, the Scriptures teach otherwise.</p>
|
|
|
|
<p><b>Test</b></p>
|
|
<p>We are told to put things to the test.
|
|
<blockquote><p>Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world (<a id="nbi557-si1" onClick="return mV('1Jo',4,1);">1Jo 4:1</a>).</p></blockquote>
|
|
|
|
<p>Paul encouraged the Thessalonians to test everything.
|
|
<blockquote><p>Test all things; hold fast what is good (<a id="nbi557-si2" onClick="return mV('1Th',5,21);">1Th 5:21</a>).</p></blockquote>
|
|
|
|
<p><b>Use Our Minds</b></p>
|
|
<p>The Bible encourages us to think.
|
|
<blockquote><p>You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind (<a id="nbi557-si3" onClick="return mV('Mat',22,37);">Mat 22:37</a>).</p></blockquote>
|
|
|
|
<br><b>Not Worldly Wisdom</b></p>
|
|
<p>Some have pointed to the following expression of the apostle Paul to denigrate education and knowledge.
|
|
<blockquote><p>When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified (<a id="nbi557-si4" onClick="return mV('1Cr',2,2);">1Cr 2:2</a>).</p></blockquote>

|
<p>Yet this verse is speaking of the worldly wisdom that attempts to know God apart from Christ.</p>
|
|
|
|
<p><b>What and Why</b></p>
|
|
<p>Scripture commands us to know not only what we believe but why we believe it.
|
|
<blockquote><p>But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear (<a id="nbi557-si5" onClick="return mV('1Pe',3,15);">1Pe 3:15</a>).</p></blockquote>

<p><b>Summary</b></p>
|
|
<p>There is no hint in Scripture that the Bible is anti-intellectual. God has given us our minds to use for His honor and glory.</p>
