<div class="SSN_rnum">I. ANOTHER COMFORTER.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">A. The Greek word translated Comforter is parakletos which literally means alongside to help.</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">1. Jesus had been a comforter to them during the time they had been walking with Him.</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">2. He is talking about leaving them now and you can imagine the thoughts that must be going through their minds. How will they ever get along without Him? Jesus was a great one to have around.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">a. Especially, if you were caught in a storm out on the lake.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">b. Or if you had a tax man bugging you.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">c. When you were being challenged by the hostile Pharisees.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">d. When there was a serious illness or death.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">B. This other Comforter is described by Jesus as:</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">1. The Spirit of truth.</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">2. The Holy Spirit.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">C. The Father had sent His Son into the world to be a Comforter to man, now His Son will soon be returning to the Father, but He has promised to pray to the Father that He would send to them another Comforter.</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">1. In verse 26, He says, "But the Comforter which is the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name."</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">2. In 15:26 He said, "But when the Comforter is come whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of Truth which proceedeth from the Father."</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">3. Further in 16:7, He said, "Nevertheless, I tell you the truth it is necessary that I go away: for if I go not away, The Comforter will not come to you."</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">4. All of these verses bring into clear focus the triune nature of the Godhead.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">a. Jesus is praying to the Father to send the Holy Spirit. In the same token Jesus is promising to send the Holy Spirit to them from the Father.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">b. In all of the verses we see the three persons of the Godhead.</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">5. On the day of Pentecost when the Spirit came upon the waiting disciples, Peter used that fact of the Holy Spirit coming upon them as a proof that Jesus had ascended to the Father. <a onClick="return mV('Act',2,32);">Acts 2:32</a>, "This same Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exhalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has shed forth this which you now see, and hear."</div>
<div class="SSN_rnum">II. THE MINISTRY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">A. First of all as the Comforter, one who has come alongside to help.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">B. To teach us all things, and to bring to our remembrance the word of Jesus Christ.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">C. To testify of Jesus Christ. 15:26.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">D. To reprove the world of sin, righteousness, and of judgment.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">E. To guide us into all truth. 16:13.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">F. To show us things to come. 16:13.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">G. He will glorify Jesus. 16:14.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">H. He will show us the things of the Father and of the Son. 16:15.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">I. To give us the power that we lack. "You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit is come upon you and you shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem..."</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">1. Power to be like Jesus.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">a. And we all with unveiled faces beholding the glory of the Lord are changed into the same image from glory to glory by the same Spirit.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">b. Not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to His mercy He saved us, by the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Spirit.</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">2. Power to be witnesses. "But you shall receive power..."</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">J. One who comes alongside to help, "But the Spirit also beareth our weaknesses for we do not know always how to pray as we ought."</div>
<div class="SSN_rnum">III. THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT TO THE BELIEVER.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">A. "For He dwelleth with you, and He shall be in you.</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">1. Here Jesus uses two Greek prepositions to describe the relationship, para or with and in.</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">2. The Holy Spirit was with them. This is the first relationship that you have with the Sprit.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">a. He is with you to convict you of sin.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">b. He is with you to testify of Jesus Christ as your sin bearer.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">c. He is with you to guide you to the truth.</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">3. He shall be in you.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">a. When you open your life to receive Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit comes into your life.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">b. Know you not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, you are not your own, you have been bought with a price.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">c. If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, He is none of His.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">d. Be not drunk with wine wherein is excess, but be filled with the Holy Spirit.</div>
<div class="SSN_level3">4. Jesus speaks of a still further relationship that the believer has with the Holy Spirit, and that is when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. "And you shall receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses unto Me. Here the Greek preposition "epi" is used. Upon or over.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">a. It is one thing to have the Holy Spirit in you, it is quite another to have the Holy Spirit flowing out of your life like a torrent of living water.</div>
<div class="SSN_level4">b. That my life whould be chosen by God as a vessel to contain the Holy Spirit is mind boggling. But to think that my life can become a channel through which the Holy Spirit can flow out to others is beyond comprehension.</div>
<div class="SSN_rnum">IV. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A GIFT FOR THE CHURCH.</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">A. "Whom the world cannot receive for it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him."</div>
<div class="SSN_level2">B. When on the day that the Holy Spirit was sent to the church, the multitude asked Peter what they could do, and Peter answered, "Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sin and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."</div>
