<div class="SSN_rnum">I. "THEREFORE WHEN HE HAD GONE OUT."</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">A. When Jesus handed to Judas the sop, it was a sign of friendship. I believe that this was the last opportunity for Judas. This was the moment that the die was cast.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. It was then the decision was formed in his mind to betray the Lord.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. It was then that Satan entered him, and Jesus commanded him that what he did, to do quickly.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">B. He went out and it was night.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. This was the hour of darkness.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. There was never a darker hour in the history of man than this day.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">3. It would seem that this was the day for the triumph for the forces of darkness.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">4. The light of the world had come into the world but it would appear that soon the world would extinguish that light.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">5. In the beginning of this book, John told us concerning Jesus, "In Him was life, and the life was the light of man, and that the light shone in the darkness, but the darkness comprehended it not."</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">6. As soon as Jesus is being nailed to the cross He will be praying, "Father forgive them, for they know not not what they do."</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_rnum">II. "THEREFORE, WHEN HE HAD GONE OUT, JESUS SAID, NOW IS THE SON OF MAN GLORIFIED, AND GOD IS GLORIFIED IN HIM." NOW THAT JUDAS HAS LEFT THE ROOM, AND HAS GONE ON HIS WAY TO BETRAY JESUS, THE CROSS IS ASSURED.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">A. Jesus uses this title "The Son of Man" ten times in the gospel of John. This, the tenth and last time.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. The title comes from the prophecy in <a onClick="return mV('Dan',7,13);">Daniel 7:13</a> where he sees one like the Son of man, coming in the clouds of heaven. It is thus a Messianic title.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">a. This first time in the gospel of John that He uses this title is when He is speaking with Nathanael, who marveled at the fact that Jesus knew things about him.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">b. Jesus answered in essence that he had not seen anything yet, that he was to see the angels of heaven ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">B. Earlier Jesus kept repeating that the hour had not yet come for Him to be glorified. But now He declares that the hour had come.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. Earlier when He was talking to them of the death of Lazarus He said that the sickness was not unto death, but that the Father might be glorified in the Son.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. He was to be glorified by the raising of Lazarus from the dead.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">3. In the next chapter He will encourage His disciples to make their requests to the Father in His name, that the Father might be glorified in the Son.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">4. Now the Father is to be glorified in the Son by the obedience of the Son unto death.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">C. The cross is the place of glory.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. Paul said, "God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ."</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. People like to glory in their accomplishments.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">a. You watch the presenting of the Oscars, what a glorying in the flesh.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">b. You wear a Super Bowl ring with great pride.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">3. In the spiritual realm, we see the same thing, men who seek to glory in their accomplishments for the Lord or for their gifts to the Lord.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">a. We see ministers glorying in their success.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">b. We see T.V. evangelists strutting around drawing all kinds of attention to themselves by their exaggerated actions or stylish clothes or the gaudy jewelry.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">4. God sought to eliminate all of this by making our salvation a gift of God to us, by our simply believing in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross for our sins.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">a. The purpose of justification by faith was to eliminate boasting.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">b. If I could be justified by works then I would have grounds for boasting. I would be boasting in my works for God.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">c. Because my justification is possible only through the sacrifice of Jesus upon the cross, I have no place for boasting except in the cross of Christ. "Forbid it Lord that I should boast save in the death of Christ my God. All the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood."</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">D. "And God is glorified in Him."</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. Jesus had said, "Let your light so shine before men that when they see your good works, they will glorify your Father which is in heaven."</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">a. The work of Jesus upon the cross for us not only causes us to glory in Jesus, but also to glory in the Father, that He loved us so much He was willing to send His Son to make the atonement for our sins.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">b. So not only is Jesus glorified because of the cross, but the Father is glorified as well.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. We thus find ourselves giving thanks and glory to Jesus Christ for receiving the penalty for our sins, but we also thank the Father for the marvelous grace and love toward us to allow His Son to come and die in our stead.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level5">"I will praise Him, I will praise Him,</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level5">Praise the Lamb for sinners slain,</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level5">Give Him glory all ye people,</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level5">For His blood can wash away each stain.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level5" style="margin-top:10px;">Glory, glory, to the Father,</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level5">Glory, glory to the Son,</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level5">Glory, glory, to the Spirit,</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level5">Glory to the three in one."</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_rnum">III. "IF GOD BE GLORIFIED IN HIM, GOD SHALL ALSO GLORIFY HIM IN HIMSELF."</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">A. It was the obedience of Jesus to the Father that caused the Father to glory in Him. We are told that He was obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">B. God shall also glorify Him in Himself.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. Jesus came to reveal the Father to man.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. No man had seen the Father at any time but the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, He hath manifested Him.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">3. What did He manifest to us concerning the Father?</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">a. That the Father loved us?</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">b. And how do I know that the Father loves me? Because He sent His Son to die for me. But God commendeth His love towards us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for the ungodly. Herein is love, not that we loved God but that God loved us and sent His son to be the propitiation for our sins. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">c. The proof that God offers to you to affirm His love is the cross.</div>
|
|
