<div class="SSN_intro">Intro. As Paul is listing the spiritual blessings that we have received in Christ, He now speaks of the redemption through His blood.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_rnum">I. THE WORD REDEEM.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">A. To buy back; repurchase. To get or win back. To liberate by payment; ransom.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">B. How used in the Old Testament.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. The redemption of the first born.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',13,11);">EXO 13:11</a> And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites, as he sware unto thee and to thy fathers, and shall give it thee,</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',13,12);">EXO 13:12</a> That thou shalt set apart unto the LORD all that openeth the matrix, and every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast; the males [shall be] the LORD'S.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',13,13);">EXO 13:13</a> And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem it, then thou shalt break his neck: and all the firstborn of man among thy children shalt thou redeem.</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',13,14);">EXO 13:14</a> And it shall be when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What [is] this? that thou shalt say unto him, By strength of hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt, from the house of bondage:</div>

<div class="SSN_level3">2. The redemption of land.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',25,23);">LEV 25:23</a> The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land [is] mine; for ye [are] strangers and sojourners with me.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',25,24);">LEV 25:24</a> And in all the land of your possession ye shall grant a redemption for the land.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',25,25);">LEV 25:25</a> If thy brother be waxen poor, and hath sold away [some] of his possession, and if any of his kin come to redeem it, then shall he redeem that which his brother sold.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',25,26);">LEV 25:26</a> And if the man have none to redeem it, and himself be able to redeem it;</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',25,27);">LEV 25:27</a> Then let him count the years of the sale thereof, and restore the overplus unto the man to whom he sold it; that he may return unto his possession.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',25,28);">LEV 25:28</a> But if he be not able to restore [it] to him, then that which is sold shall remain in the hand of him that hath bought it until the year of jubilee: and in the jubilee it shall go out, and he shall return unto his possession.</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',25,29);">LEV 25:29</a> And if a man sell a dwelling house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; [within] a full year may he redeem it.</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',25,30);">LEV 25:30</a> And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that [is] in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubilee.</div>

<div class="SSN_level3">3. The redemption of a slave.</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',25,47);">LEV 25:47</a> And if a sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother [that dwelleth] by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger [or] sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger's family:</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',25,48);">LEV 25:48</a> After that he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him:</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',25,49);">LEV 25:49</a> Either his uncle, or his uncle's son, may redeem him, or [any] that is nigh of kin unto him of his family may redeem him; or if he be able, he may redeem himself.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_rnum">II. EXAMPLES.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">A. Jeremiah.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Jer',32,6);">JER 32:6</a> And Jeremiah said, The word of the LORD came unto me, saying,</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Jer',32,7);">JER 32:7</a> Behold, Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee, saying, Buy thee my field that [is] in Anathoth: for the right of redemption [is] thine to buy [it].</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Jer',32,8);">JER 32:8</a> So Hanameel mine uncle's son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me, Buy my field, I pray thee, that [is] in Anathoth, which [is] in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance [is] thine, and the redemption [is] thine; buy [it] for thyself. Then I knew that this [was] the word of the LORD.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Jer',32,9);">JER 32:9</a> And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle's son, that [was] in Anathoth, and weighed him the money, [even] seventeen shekels of silver.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Jer',32,10);">JER 32:10</a> And I subscribed the evidence, and sealed [it], and took witnesses, and weighed [him] the money in the balances.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Jer',32,11);">JER 32:11</a> So I took the evidence of the purchase, [both] that which was sealed [according] to the law and custom, and that which was open:</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Jer',32,12);">JER 32:12</a> And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, in the sight of Hanameel mine uncle's [son], and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase, before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison.</div>

<div class="SSN_level2">B. Ruth, the story of Ruth.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. Welfare law.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',19,9);">LEV 19:9</a> And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Lev',19,10);">LEV 19:10</a> And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather [every] grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I [am] the LORD your God.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">a. Interpretations of the law declared that if you dropped any grain on the ground, you could not pick it up.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">b. You could only take one swipe with the sickle, that which was not cut clean would have to be left.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. Law of raising up name of dead brother.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Deu',25,5);">DEU 25:5</a> If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her.</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Deu',25,6);">DEU 25:6</a> And it shall be, [that] the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother [which is] dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Deu',25,7);">DEU 25:7</a> And if the man like not to take his brother's wife, then let his brother's wife go up to the gate unto the elders, and say, My husband's brother refuseth to raise up unto his brother a name in Israel, he will not perform the duty of my husband's brother.</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Deu',25,8);">DEU 25:8</a> Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and [if] he stand [to it], and say, I like not to take her;</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Deu',25,9);">DEU 25:9</a> Then shall his brother's wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother's house.</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Deu',25,10);">DEU 25:10</a> And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe loosed.</div>

<div class="SSN_level4">a. This was a early custom that preceeded the law by hundreds of years but was later incorporated into the law.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">b. The case of Judah and Tamar.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">3. The blessing of Naomi by her friends, "And may your house be like the house of Pharez whom Tamar bore unto Judah."</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">C. Boaz redeemed the field in order to obtain a bride.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">D. Turning to New Testament.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. The kingdom of heaven is like unto a man going through a field and discovering a treasure.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. Peter.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('1Pe',1,18);">1PE 1:18</a> Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, [as] silver and gold, from your vain conversation [received] by tradition from your fathers;</div>
