csb[3] = ""\'Your silver and your gold are mine! And your best wives and children are mine as well! \' "";
csb[4] = "Then the king of Israel answered, "Just as you say, my lord the king: I am yours, along with all that I have."";
csb[5] = "The messengers then returned and said, "This is what Ben-hadad says: \'I have sent messengers to you, saying: You are to give me your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children.";
csb[6] = ""But at this time tomorrow I will send my servants to you, and they will search your palace and your servants\' houses. They will lay their hands on and take away whatever is precious to you.\' "";
csb[7] = "Then the king of Israel called for all the elders of the land and said, "Recognize that this one is only looking for trouble, for he demanded my wives, my children, my silver, and my gold, and I didn\'t turn him down."";
csb[8] = "All the elders and all the people said to him, "Don\'t listen or agree."";
csb[9] = "So he said to Ben-hadad\'s messengers, "Say to my lord the king, \'Everything you demanded of your servant the first time, I will do, but this thing I cannot do.\' " So the messengers left and took word back to him.";
csb[10] = "Then Ben-hadad sent messengers to him and said, "May the gods punish me and do so severely if Samaria\'s dust amounts to a handful for each of the people who follow me."";
csb[11] = "The king of Israel answered, "Say this: \'Don\'t let the one who puts on his armor boast like the one who takes it off.\' "";
csb[12] = "When Ben-hadad heard this response, while he and the kings were drinking in their quarters, he said to his servants, "Take your positions." So they took their positions against the city.";
csb[13] = "A prophet approached King Ahab of Israel and said, "This is what the LORD says: \'Do you see this whole huge army? Watch, I am handing it over to you today so that you may know that I am the LORD.\' "";
csb[14] = "Ahab asked, "By whom? " And the prophet said, "This is what the LORD says: \'By the young men of the provincial leaders.\' " Then he asked, "Who is to start the battle? " He said, "You."";
csb[15] = "So Ahab mobilized the young men of the provincial leaders, and there were 232. After them he mobilized all the Israelite troops: 7,000.";
csb[16] = "They marched out at noon while Ben-hadad and the thirty-two kings who were helping him were getting drunk in their quarters.";
csb[17] = "The young men of the provincial leaders marched out first. Then Ben-hadad sent out scouts, and they reported to him, saying, "Men are marching out of Samaria."";
csb[18] = "So he said, "If they have marched out in peace, take them alive, and if they have marched out for battle, take them alive."";
csb[19] = "The young men of the provincial leaders and the army behind them marched out from the city,";
csb[20] = "and each one struck down his opponent. So the Arameans fled and Israel pursued them, but King Ben-hadad of Aram escaped on a horse with the cavalry.";
csb[21] = "Then the king of Israel marched out and attacked the cavalry and the chariots. He inflicted a severe slaughter on Aram.";
csb[22] = "The prophet approached the king of Israel and said to him, "Go and strengthen yourself, then consider carefully what you should do, for in the spring the king of Aram will attack you."";
csb[23] = "Now the king of Aram\'s servants said to him, "Their gods are gods of the hill country. That\'s why they were stronger than we were. Instead, we should fight with them on the plain; then we will certainly be stronger than they are.";
csb[24] = ""Also do this: remove each king from his position and appoint captains in their place.";
csb[25] = ""Raise another army for yourself like the army you lost -- horse for horse, chariot for chariot -- and let\'s fight with them on the plain; and we will certainly be stronger than they are." The king listened to them and did it.";
csb[26] = "In the spring, Ben-hadad mobilized the Arameans and went up to Aphek to battle Israel.";
csb[27] = "The Israelites mobilized, gathered supplies, and went to fight them. The Israelites camped in front of them like two little flocks of goats, while the Arameans filled the landscape.";
csb[28] = "Then the man of God approached and said to the king of Israel, "This is what the LORD says: \'Because the Arameans have said: The LORD is a god of the mountains and not a god of the valleys, I will hand over all this whole huge army to you. Then you will know that I am the LORD.\' "";
csb[29] = "They camped opposite each other for seven days. On the seventh day, the battle took place, and the Israelites struck down the Arameans -- one hundred thousand foot soldiers in one day.";
csb[30] = "The ones who remained fled into the city of Aphek, and the wall fell on those twenty-seven thousand remaining men. Ben-hadad also fled and went into an inner room in the city.";
csb[31] = "His servants said to him, "Consider this: we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. So let\'s put sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads, and let\'s go out to the king of Israel. Perhaps he will spare your life."";
csb[32] = "So they dressed with sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, went to the king of Israel, and said, "Your servant Ben-hadad says, \'Please spare my life.\' " So he said, "Is he still alive? He is my brother."";
csb[33] = "Now the men were looking for a sign of hope, so they quickly picked up on this and responded, "Yes, it is your brother Ben-hadad." Then he said, "Go and bring him." So Ben-hadad came out to him, and Ahab had him come up into the chariot.";
csb[34] = "Then Ben-hadad said to him, "I restore to you the cities that my father took from your father, and you may set up marketplaces for yourself in Damascus, like my father set up in Samaria." Ahab responded, "On the basis of this treaty, I release you." So he made a treaty with him and released him.";
csb[35] = "One of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow prophet by the word of the LORD, "Strike me! " But the man refused to strike him.";
csb[36] = "He told him, "Because you did not listen to the LORD, mark my words: When you leave me, a lion will kill you." When he left him, a lion attacked and killed him.";
csb[37] = "The prophet found another man and said to him, "Strike me! " So the man struck him, inflicting a wound.";
csb[38] = "Then the prophet went and waited for the king on the road. He disguised himself with a bandage over his eyes.";
csb[39] = "As the king was passing by, he cried out to the king and said, "Your servant marched out into the middle of the battle. Suddenly, a man turned aside and brought someone to me and said, \'Guard this man! If he is ever missing, it will be your life in place of his life, or you will weigh out seventy-five pounds of silver.\'";
csb[40] = ""But while your servant was busy here and there, he disappeared." The king of Israel said to him, "That will be your sentence; you yourself have decided it."";
csb[41] = "He quickly removed the bandage from his eyes. The king of Israel recognized that he was one of the prophets.";
csb[42] = "The prophet said to him, "This is what the LORD says: \'Because you released from your hand the man I had set apart for destruction, it will be your life in place of his life and your people in place of his people.\' "";
csb[43] = "The king of Israel left for home resentful and angry, and he entered Samaria.";
kjv[1] = "And Benhadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and [there were] thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.";
kjv[2] = "And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Benhadad,";
kjv[3] = "Thy silver and thy gold [is] mine; thy wives also and thy children, [even] the goodliest, [are] mine.";
kjv[4] = "And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I [am] thine, and all that I have.";
kjv[5] = "And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Benhadad, saying, Although I have sent unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;";
kjv[6] = "Yet I will send my servants unto thee to morrow about this time, and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, [that] whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put [it] in their hand, and take [it] away.";
kjv[7] = "Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this [man] seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.";
kjv[8] = "And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken not [unto him], nor consent.";
kjv[9] = "Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Benhadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.";
kjv[10] = "And Benhadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.";
kjv[11] = "And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell [him], Let not him that girdeth on [his harness] boast himself as he that putteth it off.";
kjv[12] = "And it came to pass, when [Benhadad] heard this message, as he [was] drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set [yourselves in array]. And they set [themselves in array] against the city.";
kjv[13] = "And, behold, there came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I [am] the LORD.";
kjv[14] = "And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the LORD, [Even] by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.";
kjv[15] = "Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, [even] all the children of Israel, [being] seven thousand.";
kjv[16] = "And they went out at noon. But Benhadad [was] drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.";
kjv[17] = "And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Benhadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.";
kjv[18] = "And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.";
kjv[19] = "So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.";
kjv[20] = "And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Benhadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the horsemen.";
kjv[21] = "And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.";
kjv[22] = "And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.";
kjv[23] = "And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods [are] gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.";
kjv[24] = "And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:";
kjv[25] = "And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, [and] surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.";
kjv[26] = "And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Benhadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.";
kjv[27] = "And the children of Israel were numbered, and were all present, and went against them: and the children of Israel pitched before them like two little flocks of kids; but the Syrians filled the country.";
kjv[28] = "And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD [is] God of the hills, but he [is] not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I [am] the LORD.";
kjv[29] = "And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And [so] it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day.";
kjv[30] = "But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and [there] a wall fell upon twenty and seven thousand of the men [that were] left. And Benhadad fled, and came into the city, into an inner chamber.";
kjv[31] = "And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel [are] merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life.";
kjv[32] = "So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and [put] ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Benhadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, [Is] he yet alive? he [is] my brother.";
kjv[33] = "Now the men did diligently observe whether [any thing would come] from him, and did hastily catch [it]: and they said, Thy brother Benhadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Benhadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.";
kjv[34] = "And [Benhadad] said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then [said Ahab], I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.";
kjv[35] = "And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.";
kjv[36] = "Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.";
kjv[37] = "Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded [him].";
kjv[38] = "So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.";
kjv[39] = "And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.";
kjv[40] = "And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So [shall] thy judgment [be]; thyself hast decided [it].";
kjv[41] = "And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he [was] of the prophets.";
