How Does the Bible Describe Sin?

The Bible gives the following descriptions of sin:

1. Missing the Mark

God has a holy standard of perfection that He has given to us. When we sin we miss that mark.

Therefore, to the person who knows to do good and does not do it, to them it is sin (Jam 4:17).

Sins can be omission as well as commission. Sin is missing the mark, the divine standard that God has set up.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23).

Sin also includes hitting the wrong thing. It not only has the aspect of missing the proper goal, but also involves hitting of the wrong target. For example, the Bible says, God is love (1Jo 4:8). Any feeling other than love toward our fellow believers is sin.

2. Going Astray

Sin is likened to us going astray.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to their own way (Isa 53:6).

3. Transgression

The Bible also calls sin transgression. This has the idea of overstepping the law of God.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions (Psa 51:1)

4.Trespass

A trespass is putting our own will against God's

And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins (Eph 2:1)

Summary

Sin is lawlessness, breaking the law of God. Sin consists of not only missing the mark, but hitting the wrong thing. All of us have sinned.
