<p>Doudney wrote the lyrics on the occasion of a friend’s death. Sankey saw them while in Bristol, England, and wrote music for them shortly thereafter. The song was sung at the funeral of preacher <a href="./hymns/hymns_bio/bio_s_p_spurgeon_ch.html" target="_blank">Charles Haddon Spurgeon</a>.</td>
