Can Sin Cause Us to Lose Our Heavenly Rewards?

Yes. Sin can cause us to lose our reward in heaven. The Bible says that the Christian is building for eternal reward right now.

For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one's work will become manifest; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is (1Cr 3:11-14).

There are two types of building material: burnable and unburnable, destructible and indestructible.

Tested by Fire

Our works will come under the holy scrutiny of God. The outward looks will not count. The inner essential nature will be revealed.

Materials Built Upon

The thing that determines whether we build upon precious stones or wood, hay, and stubble is in whose strength are we building these things.

We should ask ourselves the following questions: Whose strength are we doing things? God's or ours? Whose glory are we seeking? God's or ourselves? Are we doing things for the right motive? Anything we do without the leading of the Holy Spirit will not stand the test.

Suffer Loss?

Believers will suffer loss. This does not refer to loss of salvation. It means there will be no reward to present to the Lord as a thank offering for all that it cost Him to provide us our salvation.

Summary

Sin will cause us to suffer loss of some of our reward in heaven. It will not cause us to lose our salvation but rather the rewards earned through obedience to Christ.
