<p>The cloud was the symbol of the Lord's presence, and it was the secret of Israel's protection. Sometimes the cloud was <i>over</i> them; sometimes <i>behind</i> them; and sometimes <i>before</i> them. Thus the Lord was over them to shield; behind them to defend; and before them to lead.
