<h2>455. TREASURES OF THE NEW TESTAMENT</h2>
|
|
<p>1. <b>In Christ are found "all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge"</b> (<a id="fem455-si1" onclick="return mV('Col',2,3);">Col 2:3</a>). The red sardius of the blessing of His atonement, the green emerald of the power of His life, the blue sapphire of the heavenly gladness of His joy, the variegated agate of the many sidedness of His grace, and the flashing diamond of the glory of His coming, are all made known by Christ, and are found by us as we are in Him.</p>

<p>2. <b>Israel is Jehovah's peculiar treasure</b> (<a id="fem455-si2" onclick="return mV('Exd',19,5);">Exd 19:5</a>; <a id="fem455-si3" onclick="return mV('Psa',135,4);">Psa 135:4</a>), which He found in the field of the nations of this world (<a id="fem455-si4" onclick="return mV('Mat',13,44);">Mat 13:44</a>), and for which Christ has given all He had (<a id="fem455-si5" onclick="return mV('Jhn',17,5);">Jhn 17:5</a>), in emptying Himself of His glory (<a id="fem455-si6" onclick="return mV('Phl',2,7);">Phl 2:7</a>, R.V.), and becoming poor (<a id="fem455-si7" onclick="return mV('2Cr',8,9);">2Cr 8:9</a>). This privilege now applies to the Church during Israel's rejection (<a id="fem455-si8" onclick="return mV('Eph',1,'18-23');">Eph 1:18-23</a>).</p>

<p>3. <b>The Gospel is a treasure.</b> The apostle, by the Holy Spirit, in speaking of the "glorious Gospel," says, we have "this treasure in earthen vessels" (<a id="fem455-si9" onclick="return mV('2Cr',4,7);">2Cr 4:7</a>). As the lights were in the pitchers of Gideon and his followers, and flashed forth to the discomfort of the Midianites (<a id="fem455-si10" onclick="return mV('Jdg',7,16,17);">Jdg 7:16-17</a>), so the light of the Gospel of Christ, with which every true servant of Christ is entrusted, shall shine forth, as they live it truly and tell it out faithfully, and it will cause the darkness of sin to flee, the gloom of unbelief to be scattered, and the fog of iniquity to be gone.</p>

<p>4. <b>There is treasure in the heart of every man</b> (<a id="fem455-si11" onclick="return mV('Mat',12,35);">Mat 12:35</a>). The treasure is either a blessing or a curse, according to its character. When it is the good treasure of the truth of God, then the life is beautiful with holiness, and fruitful with the graces of the Spirit; but when it is the evil treasure of the world, then the character is blighted by sin, and marred with iniquity.</p>

<p>5. <b>Earthly treasure</b> (<a id="fem455-si12" onclick="return mV('Luk',12,21);">Luk 12:21</a>). Thieves may steal it, moth may corrupt it, rust may spoil it, time will decay it, failure may take it, friends may borrow it, and death will say, "you must leave it."</p>

<p>6. <b>Heavenly treasure</b> (<a id="fem455-si13" onclick="return mV('Mat',6,20);">Mat 6:20</a>). This is enduring in its nature, incorruptible in its texture, safe in its keeping, heavenly in its origin, holy in its character, ennobling in its possession, and worth the having.</p>

<p>7. <b>Treasures of wrath</b> (<a id="fem455-si14" onclick="return mV('Rom',2,5);">Rom 2:5</a>). The thunderbolts of God's indignation against sin, the lightnings of His wrath, the fire of His judgment, and the putting forth of His power, are but slumbering till the self-willed sinner has filled up his cup of iniquity, when they shall burst upon him to his eternal shame, confusion, and punishment.</p>
