<td><em>Words:</em> Attributed variously to King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden; Jacob Fabricius (1593-1654), a chaplain in Adolphus’ army; and Johann Michael Altenburg (1584-1640), a minister in Erfurt, Germany (<em>Verzage nicht du Häuflein klein</em>). <a href="./hymns/hymns_bio/bio_w_i_winkworth_c.html" target="_blank">Catherine Winkworth</a> translated the lyrics from German to English in <em>Lyra Germanica</em>, 1855.

<p>Gustavus Adolphus’ troops reportedly sang this hymn on the morning of the Battle of Lützen (in the Thirty Years’ War), November 6, 1632, in which the king died.</p>
