<p class="just">Allen was educated in Kirkby Lonsdale. After living for a while in Glasgow, he returned to Kirkby Lonsdale and worked at the local bank. He published 148 hymns in <i>Hymns of the Christian Life</i> (London: Nisbet, 1861).</p>
