<p>While the doctrine of revelation concerns itself with God supernaturally unveiling truths to humanity we would not otherwise know, the term "revelation" is used in the New Testament in several different ways: They include the following.</p>
|
|
|
|
<p><b>1. The Disclosure of Truth in General</b></p>
|
|
<p>Revelation is used of the basic disclosure of truth. The coming of the Lord Jesus was to be the following.</p>
|
|
<blockquote><p>A light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel (<a id="nbi279-si1" onClick="return mV('Luk',2,32);">Luk 2:32</a>).</p></blockquote>
|
|
<p>The Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Rome.</p>
|
|
<blockquote><p>Now to him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past (<a id="nbi279-si2" onClick="return mV('Rom',16,25);">Rom 16:25</a>).</p></blockquote>
|
|
<p>Paul told the Ephesians.</p>
|
|
<blockquote><p>I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better (<a id="nbi279-si3" onClick="return mV('Eph',1,17);">Eph 1:17</a>).</p></blockquote>
|
|
<p>The use of the word revelation in these contexts refers to the general disclosing of truth.
|
|
|
|
<p><b>2. A Specific Area of Truth</b>
|
|
<p>The term revelation is also used the disclosure of a specific area of truth. The Apostle Paul spoke of specific revelations of truth that were given to him by the Lord.</p>
|
|
<blockquote><p>I must go on boasting. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord (<a id="nbi279-si4" onClick="return mV('2Cr',12,1);">2Cr 12:1</a>).</p></blockquote>
|
|
<p>The revelations he received were supernaturally given.</p>
|
|
<blockquote><p>I did not receive it from any human, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ (<a id="nbi279-si5" onClick="return mV('Gal',1,12);">Gal 1:12</a>).</p></blockquote>
|
|
<p>Paul informed the Ephesians as to the truth that had been revealed to him.</p>
|
|
<blockquote><p>That is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly (<a id="nbi279-si6" onClick="return mV('Eph',3,3);">Eph 3:3</a>).</p></blockquote>
|
|
<p>These were special revelations that Paul received from the Lord. After receiving these truths he passed it on to others.
|
|
|
|
<p><b>3. The Second Coming of Christ</b>
|
|
<p>The word "revelation" is also used in reference to the Second Coming of Christ. It is also known as the "revelation of Christ." Paul wrote.</p>
|
|
<blockquote><p>Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed (<a id="nbi279-si7" onClick="return mV('1Cr',1,7);">1Cr 1:7</a>).</p></blockquote>
|
|
|
|
<p><b>4. The Book of Revelation</b>
|
|
<p>Finally, the word is also used of the last book of the Bible, the Book of Revelation. John wrote.</p>
|
|
<blockquote><p>The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John (<a id="nbi279-si8" onClick="return mV('Rev',1,1);">Rev 1:1</a>).</p></blockquote>
|
|
|
|
<p><b>Summary</b>
|
|
<p>The term "revelation" is used in at least four different senses in the New Testament. It can speak of disclosure of truth in general, a specific area of truth, the Second Coming of Christ, and the Book of Revelation. The context must determine the particular way in which the word is used.</p>
