<div class="SSN_rnum">I. IN THE FIRST VERSE PAUL DECLARES THAT HE IS SEPARATED UNTO THE GOSPEL OF GOD.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">A. The word gospel means good news.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. What is the good news of God?</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">a. It concerns His Son Jesus Christ who is our Lord.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">b. It was promised by His prophets in the holy scriptures.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">c. He was to be a descendant of David according to the flesh.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Isa',9,6);">ISA 9:6</a> For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Isa',9,7);">ISA 9:7</a> Of the increase of [his] government and peace [there shall be] no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Jer',23,5);">JER 23:5</a> Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Luk',1,32);">LUK 1:32</a> He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Luk',1,33);">LUK 1:33</a> And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.</div>

<div class="SSN_level4">d. He was declared to be the Son of God with power by His resurrection from the dead.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">e. Jesus stands above, separate and distinct from all other founders of religious systems in His resurrection from the dead.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">B. This good news of God's offer of salvation to sinning man is the subject of the book of Romans.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. Here in chapter 1 Paul will show to us that the whole world is guilty before God.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. Chapter 2 will show that the Jews are as guilty as the Gentiles.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">3. Chapter 3 shows us that the good news is that God has provided that all men may be justified by their faith in Jesus.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">4. Chapter 4 he will show how that this has been the principle for justification all along.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">5. Chapter 5 He will show us the results of justification by faith.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">6. Chapter 6 will declare to us how that we are to be delivered from the power of the indwelling sin.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">7. Chapter 7 will show to us the impossibility of self reformation.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">8. Chapter 8 will show God's provision of His Spirit to enable us to do and be what we could not be in and of ourselves.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">9. Chapter 9 shows how that by faith, the Gentiles attained a righteous standing before God whereas the Jews failed to attain that righteous standing because they sought it by the works of the law.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">10. Paul shows that both Jew and Gentile must come to God through Jesus Christ, and that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">11. Chapter 11 shows that the Jews for the most part are blind to the good news of God, and that the Gentiles who have received must continue to stand in faith, the day is coming when God will remove the blindness from Israel.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">12. Chapter 12 shows that man needs more than reformation, he needs transformation by the Spirit of God.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">13. Shows that obedience and love are the fruit of this new life in the Spirit, and the law if fulfilled by our loving God foremost, and our neighbor as ourselves.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">14. Gives examples of what it is to walk in love.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">15. Is sort of a summation and 16 is personal greetings.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">C. As you go through the book, I want you to underline what you think are the key verses. Write down what you think that it means to you.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_rnum">II. PAUL CLAIMS THAT HE IS NOT ASHAMED OF THE GOOD NEWS OF THE MESSIAH.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">A. In his early life Paul was caught up in a religious system where a persons relationship to God depended upon their good works.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. Somehow we realize that no matter how good our works may be, we still come short of the glory of God.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. In the seventh chapter Paul will describe the turmoil that he went through trying to attain God's approval through his works.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_notes">"I do things that I do not approve of. I don't do the things that I know I should. I hate the things that I am doing. In me, that is in my flesh there dwells no good thing. I desire to do good, but I can't seem to perform up to my desires. The good that I would, I don't do. The evil that I do not want to do, is what I am doing. There is a perverse law in me, that when I would do good evil is present with me. I am a wretched man. I need someone to help me.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">3. He threw overboard all of the good works in his past when he came to the excellency of the knowledge of Jesus Christ, and considered them as refuse. They could not compare with the righteousness that God had imparted to him through Jesus Christ.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">B. Paul was always more than happy to share that good news about Jesus Christ to anyone that would listen.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_rnum">III. THIS GOOD NEWS IS THE POWER OF GOD UNTO SALVATION.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">A. I think of the power of the gospel to transform a persons life.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. I look around and see all the lives that have been transformed by the good news of Jesus Christ.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. I think of the power of the gospel to free a person from the hold that Satan has on their lives.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">3. Jesus can set you free from your bondage to your flesh.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">a. From drugs.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">b. From alcoholism.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">c. From pornography.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">B. We speak of salvation, what have I been saved from?</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. Saved from the power of Satan who once controlled my life and was destroying me.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. In verse 18 Paul speaks how that the wrath of God is going to revealed from heaven against all the ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who hold the truth of God in unrighteousness.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">a. I have been saved from the wrath of God that will come upon those who have rejected God's only provision for their sins.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">b. Ungodliness is having a wrong relationship with God. The first table of the law tells of man's relationship with God.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,1);">EXO 20:1</a> And God spake all these words, saying,</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,2);">EXO 20:2</a> I [am] the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,3);">EXO 20:3</a> Thou shalt have no other gods before me.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,4);">EXO 20:4</a> Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the water under the earth:</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,5);">EXO 20:5</a> Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God [am] a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth [generation] of them that hate me;</div>

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,6);">EXO 20:6</a> And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,7);">EXO 20:7</a> Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,8);">EXO 20:8</a> Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">c. Unrighteousness is a wrong relationship with fellow man. This is encompassed in the second table of the law.</div>
|

<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,12);">EXO 20:12</a> Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,13);">EXO 20:13</a> Thou shalt not kill.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,14);">EXO 20:14</a> Thou shalt not commit adultery.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,15);">EXO 20:15</a> Thou shalt not steal.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,16);">EXO 20:16</a> Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_verse"><a onClick="return mV('Exd',20,17);">EXO 20:17</a> Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that [is] thy neighbour's.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">d. In the next chapter Paul will tell us that we have all sinned and come short of the glory of God.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">e. He will also tell us that the wages of sin is death.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">f. The good news is that I do not have to die for my sins. God sent His Son to die in my place so that I can be saved from the penalty of my sin.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level2">C. To everyone that believeth.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">1. God's offer of salvation is made to all men.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">a. Jesus said, "That whosoever believeth in Me."</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level4">b. We used to sing a song whosoever surely meaneth me.</div>
|
|
<div class="SSN_level3">2. Believing is the key. It is by simply believing.</div>
|
|
</div>
