There are those who teach that it is not proper for the believer to develop their mind. They believe that faith in Christ must be a blind leap in the dark. However, the Scriptures teach otherwise.

Test

We are told to put things to the test.

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world (1Jo 4:1).

Paul encouraged the Thessalonians to test everything.

Test all things; hold fast what is good (1Th 5:21).

Use Our Minds

The Bible encourages us to think.

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind (Mat 22:37).

Some have pointed to the following expression of the apostle Paul to denigrate education and knowledge.

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified (1Cr 2:2).

Yet this verse is speaking of the worldly wisdom that attempts to know God apart from Christ.

What and Why

Scripture commands us to know not only what we believe but why we believe it.

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear (1Pe 3:15).

Summary

There is no hint in Scripture that the Bible is anti-intellectual. God has given us our minds to use for His honor and glory.
