Born: 1817, Edinburgh, Scotland.
Died: February 11, 1888, Renfrew-on-the-Clyde, Scotland.
Small attended the University of Edinburgh, studied divinity under Dr. Chalmers, and in 1834 joined the Free Church of Scotland. In 1847 he became minister of the Free Church at Bervie, near Montrose. His works include:

- Songs of the Vineyard in Days of Gloom and Sadness, 1846
- Hymns for Youthful Voices, 1859
- Psalms and Sacred Songs, 1866
