What about Questionable Matters That the Bible Does Not Specifically Cover?

There is the issue of doubtful things that the Bible does not specifically cover. What are we supposed to do when confronted with something the Bible does not deal with? Several principles come into play:

1. Is It Dealt With in Scripture?

First, the believer needs to find out whether the particular issue is covered in Scripture. If the matter is covered in Scripture then there is no question as to whether someone should or should not do. If the Bible says something is wrong, then it is always wrong. There are no exceptions.

2. Does It Enslave?

Does this particular area of conduct cause me to be enslaved?

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything (1Cr 6:12).

3. Can I Do It in Faith?

Is it possible to do this in faith? The Bible says that whatever is not of faith is sin.

But the person who has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin (Rom 14:23).

4. Does It Build Me up as a Christian?

Does this particular act make me a better Christian?

Everything is permissible—but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible—but not everything is constructive (1Cr 10:23).

5. Would Jesus Do Something like This?

Any act that we might do should be considered in light of the behavior of Jesus.

For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps (1Pe 2:21).

6. Would I Want Jesus to See Me Doing This?

Another question we should ask is, Would I want to be engaged in this when Jesus returns? The Bible says:

And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he is revealed we may have confidence and not be put to shame before him at his coming (1Jo 2:28).

7. Does It Glorify God?

The overriding principle is this: can I do this thing for the glory of God?

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (1Cr 10:31).

Summary

There are many issues that face us that Scripture does not specifically cover. When we face these particular issues we can apply certain principles that the Bible gives us.
