After God remakes the heavens and the earth, the Bible speaks of a city called the "new Jerusalem" coming down out of heaven. It will be an actual material city with spiritual significance.
New Jerusalem
The future home of believers is called the new Jerusalem.
And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband (Rev 21:2).
The city comes down out of heaven, uniting both heaven and earth. It is where believers will forever live with God.
Large Size
According to the biblical description, the city is approximately 1,500 miles by 1,500 miles by 1,500 miles.
The city lies foursquare, its length the same as its width; and he measured the city with his rod, fifteen hundred miles; its length and width and height are equal (Rev 21:16).
High Walls
The city will have high walls.
He also measured its wall, one hundred forty-four cubits by human measurement, which the angel was using. The wall is built of jasper, while the city is pure gold, clear as glass (Rev 21:17-18).
Golden City
The heavenly streets of gold will be in this future city, yet to appear.
And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass (Rev 21:18).
Tree of Life in City
In the midst of this city is the tree of life, as well as a river.
And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations (Rev 22:1-2).
No Temple
There is no temple in the new Jerusalem.
I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple (Rev 21:22).
No Sun Or Moon
There is no sun or moon the new Jerusalem.
The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it (Rev 21:23-24).
This will fulfill a prophecy given by the prophet Isaiah.
The sun shall no longer be your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you by night; but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory (Isa 60:19).
Summary
After God makes a new heaven and new earth, then the city of the new Jerusalem will come down from heaven. Its glorious description is given to us in Scripture. Although it will be a city of incomparable beauty, the greatest thing about it is that the Lord will dwell there with His people.
